Chris,
If it is a black rubber one, you can do that or measure the rod where the check will go and let me know the reading. I have a lot of extras that I don't use any more since making bamboo rods. I use nickel silver checks on them.

What you can do is wrap a trim band that will run up to the winding check
(hence the term winding check), but instead of wrapping it after the check is
installed wrap it first and build it up in that area to fit the winding check
diameter. Is it a metal check or a black rubber check?

Well...Sarah doesn't get back from Yosemite until tomorrow night. I took
advantage of the extra "free time" to wrap my first fly rod. Only problem
is that my winding check is just a bit too large for the rod (1/16" or so).
Does anyone have any suggestions, or do I just need to buy (i.e. order)
another one?

Uh....to keep this fly TYING related....uh....I used thread for the rod
wraps.
