Mike email me off list roughly where you will be based ... North or South Island and I'll get some info to you about where to fish..

Basically any river or Lake (and there are lots of them) in NZ have trout in em !! There will be a sports shop in any main town .. they will have fishing gear and will be all to happy to help you out with where and waht to fish..

Rotorua is a good base for fishing and touristy site seeing on the North Island.. and Queenstown or Christchurch also are good bases in the South Island..

NZ fish and game have really good brochures that talk about each region , have maps of angler access etc.. these are free and a re alos available from sports shops where you can buy your license.

Many of the rivers near Queenstown have a ballot system before season start so you may have missed them.

Rod.. take a 5 or 6 weight for streams.. and an 8 or 9 weight for Lakes.

Line you will only need a floating line.. but do not take any bright coloured lines..dull colours like kakhi, grey, dull green, beige...

fishing clothes should be dull greens or greys..

the water is clear, the fish are big and spooky...

I can photocpy a few pages out of one of my fishing books.. it has very good advice about how to fish NZ..

In NZ you generally catch more fish (70- 80 %) on nymphs  ... dry flies are generally a january /feb/march prospect...

Flies for streams :

hare and Copper

Pheasnat tails

Bead heads

Maybe a stimmie, or royal wulff for a dry..

Lakes.. you will need lures in size 4, 6 or 8.... Wes has some good links somewhere..

If you go to Rotorua.. you must try night fishing Lake Rotorua stream mouths !!!!!!

Make sure your waders are really clean.. they will wash them with stuff to kill algae, bugs and stuff when you come into the country, so  take a plasti bag with you to keep the stuff of the rest of your clothes...
