Chuck,
I expect to get shot to pieces on this from a lot on the list but these are my thoughts on rods. In the UK we describe rods as having BASICALLY three "actions". These are how the rod bends when used. The first is "through" action. It means the rod bends all the way from the tip to the butt and is a slow action rod. Next is Middle to tip. This one bends from AROUND 1/2 way along the blank and could be called a medium action rod. The last is the rod that has more action in the last third of the rod and is classed as Tip action or fast. When I introduce people to casting for the first time I use a mid tip (medium) action rod as they are GENERALLY more forgiving if you make a mess which most beginners do. Slow and fast action rods really need your casting to be pretty good to make the rod work how you want it to. If you have a fast tip action rod and its not what you can handle then try a mid tip (medium) action rod and see how you get on. I think you will get on with it niceley. Allans tip for aiming the cast 10feet above the target is great advice. There are other possible reasons your fly lands like an Appollo which need to be looked at too though. Do you use straight through tippett or a tapered tippet (leader)? Did you see my explanation
of the reason for using tapered leaders? It works for me !!
At the end of the day poboy or otherwise maybe a trip to the shop may be a good idea. The guy in the shop will let you play with a couple of rods and may even give you some free casting advice. An hour with a qaulified instructor will iron out any wrinkles you may
have picked up and you still have time to sort them out.
Get in the Legacy ( I got one o dem too ) and driveinto town matey

The shooting range is now open!!!!!!!

Mike: Thanks for those tips... I see what You mean now. I went in there and
shook My rod. VERY FAST action.. I guess that is why I have gotten where I
can cast the whole spool of line all the way to the backing, but the fly
hits the water like an Apollo spacecraft with NO chute LOL... So, in order
to get it to lightly touch the water, and thus not scare the fish away I
need to get a slower action rod??? Am I reading that correctly??? Thanks
again, Chuck
