I use my Thompson Model A (and its the old chromed model, before they came out with the black version) for the big saltwater stuff, since I've got the slatwater jaws for it (I did break a standard set o jaws abusing them with a saltwater hoo, Thompson replaced them, but strongly suggested tohat I get the saltwater jaws as well).  I've had the thing for 19 years now, so its held up well.  And after tying on a non-rotary vise so long, I often forget to use the rotary function on the Danvise.  there are two or three other vises hanging around the house as well...mainly Sunrises which are back-up and traveling vises for the most part.  But my wife ties on one of those because she likes it.  After all, its nothing but Thompson clone, and the quality depends on whther you got good or bad indian steel that day...hers must have been built on a good day. All of these tools are much better than what I tied my first fly on as a kid:  a vise grips duct taped to the basement floor.

Hey Mark,
After hearing all the talk about these other vises I was alomst afriad to say I do most of my tying on a Black Thompson A vise also,my other vise is a regal wanna be vise (for my saltwater stuff). I am satisfied with the hook holding power of both. I did however buy a Renzetti Travelers from Mark Romero I thinkit was last year and my friend borrowed it to see how he liked it and so far never got it back. Nut now he,s buying a Dynaking Barracuda Kit, so now I,ll have that vise too. I never had a chance to try a full rotary vise and being from the Old School not sure how I will like it. I tie for mostly pleasure and my own boxes  so I am not rushing or held for time I just sit at my desk and either go thru my stuff or tie totally under no pressure, so winding the thread and not turning the vise doesnt faze me at all.
I just remember it all started as a hobby and I try to keep it that way LOL
