I'd agree for trout-rods, like 9wt or less.  Wear and tear takes out more
rods than fish do.  A big name sells a lot of rods, but the little guy makes
some mighty fine stuff.

But when bluewater fish are the quarry, I'll take my $6 & $700 rods any day.
Spend a small fortune to get to another part of the planet and have a rod
break is a tragedy of beyond-the-rod proportions.

My 12wt Winston and 14wt Abel have been stressed to the max on huge fish,
and have weathered the storms.  Anything used in the salt takes a beating,
but these rods (and reels) are superb for durability.

Both have boron butt sections, which is now realized to be the strongest
material for rods.  I see they're teaming up boron and graphite together now
in the blanks, rather than just using it in the butt section.  Can't wait to
try these at the FTDS.
