Reuven, Three years ago at Tony's place after the Sowbug Skip Shorb taught me how to make thread furled leaders (6/0 UNI), and I make and use them a lot. Adding an extra long tippet is a good idea, not because the furled part would frighten the fish, but because furled leaders have a very positive turnover, and adding extra tippet enables you to have some slack in your tippet. I also made them from mono, but when I used those I started missing strikes. I think that's due to stretch. Regular mono stretches some 10% and furling it will make them stretch more.
