The thing is that people make the mistake of trying to build up heads with such a fine thread and it takes a million slippery twists. It is not something to use for building up heads. Rather, it is for keeping the build-up of thread down(I am referring to the 10/0 that I use but it is applicable to most I believe). Try to really use the minimum for the head and add a tiny amount of dubbing before completing the head. Otherwise, keep a small head but use a liberal dose of thick head cement. One other method I have used for larger heads is to do a half hitch or two, tie in some silk and for the head with it (don't need much), tie off with the G thread and head cement lightly. The 10/0 I have though is used only on size 18-28 as I only have a very limited supply for now.

LOL, Tiny dab of cement...

The flies I just tied take more than a spool of thread each and one bottle of head cement each.

I always add a tiny dab of head cement either way, but just vary the type of finishing knot and you should find one that suits your tying style. I am not  picky but don't seem to have many problems. Either way, when I finish a bunch I just do the dab.

Subject: [VFB] Guderbrod Thread Question

Folks: It's probably something a "rookie tier" like myself is doing wrong, but when Nick brought up Guderbrod thread yesterday I think it was..Well, I tried that brand, and I CANNOT get the whip finish knot NOT to unravel.. No matter if I whip finish 3-4-5-6 etc rounds, if I snipped off the thread really close, it (the knot) would come unraveled, like some of the nylon ropes that there are that just will not hold a knot..Like it has more wax than it needed??? So, I have been using Uni Thread and Danville's with no problems..The thread (The Guderbrod) "feels" like great thread, so, am i doing something wrong??? Cause I have a few spools and hate to see anything go to waste, Thanks, Chuck
