It is common place in New England to troll flies for landlocked salmon and lake trout. Imitating the smelt (their prime quarry) is the goal. To do it almost always requires lead core, levelwind reels and downriggers. Although I have two outfits with large reels and fly rods, they are not that efficient when you have 100 yds of fluorocarbon early season when the fish are boat shy.
None of this is true fly fishing - although the end result will be some of the most aerobatic and large fish that you can catch in freshwater around here. Most of these places are big water lakes. The other type of trolling which works nicely is in trout ponds using nymphs and other wet flies / streamers. In a moving float tube or small watercraft - this also works well especially when fish are not concentrated. This can be very rewarding. As with any trolling, mixing up the speed and direction are as critical as getting some action on the fly via pulling (the line) or moving the rod back and forth. Once you find fish, anchor and work a vertical slow retrieve all the way to the waters surface and don't cheat. You will be rewarded. Thanks, Chappy www.chappysguide.com
