Reuven: Good info, Thanks.. That brings up another problem I have.. Not
being able to use long leader/tippets.. I fish with an 8ft rod so I do my
own furled leaders at 4.5 ft, then add 3.0 ft of tippet material for a total
of 7.5 ft, as if I use a leader/tippet combo longer than my rod I get it
messed up in my rod eyes every time... Chuck

I use a 6X 6.5lb leader (9 ft), and a 4-5lb tippet now for most stuff. I
used to use 3lb.
For the 28s, I all some 2.2 or 3lb tippet onto that to give between 13 -
15
ft. I am not catching 10lb fish, but 1-4lb fish. It is surprising how much
force you can load it with if you take care, especially on the hook-up,
when
the line will tend to fail(for me anyway) even on small fish. When they
make
the first run, I let them play the drag and tire themselves out. If I have
no choice, and they are headed into trouble such as a log or branches, I
keep the rod as high as possible and to the size to try to lead them away.
Once the hook-up stage is done well, I don't tend to have major problems.
Somewhere I read (FF&FT Oct 06 ??) that if you take off all pressure, the
fish will stop running, as if it doesn't know it is hooked. This would be
a
good application of the theory.
All my fish have recovered well so I don't have to play too long.

Reuven: That is amazing.. what tippet did you use 12X??? ...If you did
hook
one you'd have to play it like crazy to land it right??? Having to use
such
a light tippet???, Chuck

It is the first time I used a size 28. Tied them plenty but never used
it.
I
had no chioce. I had to give them what they wanted. The were all lined up
and poking the snouts out of the water to take the hatching Caenids. I
just
had to decide which one I wanted. It is suprisingly visible at 30 feet it
you use the right materials for the wings....and don't blink!

28... Geez.. I carry a fly I tied on a #28 in my wallet just to show
ppl...
I don't see how you could possibly hook a fish on that.. But when I'm out
on
the lake and meet up with bait chunkers, when i show them a size 14 fly,
they think I'm nuts.. They say "No way will you catch a big fish on
that"...
I just say "OK" and go about my business of catching them big uns LOL,
Chuck

I fished size 28 partridge hooks yesterday to 2lb Rainbows. I tied a
Caenid
Pattern on it(Foam wings, long whisp tails and black seal's fur body). 8
takes on it in 6 minutes.
