I made some really killer GRHEs out of the phony fur that you can buy at a craft store. It has undercoat and guard hairs. Some of it is variagated in color. There is even better stuff available in fabric stores. They catch fish. They're a bit bouyant. You must add weight to sink 'em.
Of course, this brings up the question of natural vs synthetic. Aesthetically the natural is my preference, but the phoney is sure accessible. I don't use died hare's mask. I was reading in a novel last night about this discussion between the sweater makers of a small island off the coast of Scotland, and their Scottish counter parts. The islanders believe that dyes are the creation of the tarted up Scots. Good solid folk were grey or brown, as nature intended. On 1/10/07, Chuck Alexander <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Folks: I'm starting to think that the Hare's Mask I bought came with a "crew cut" LOL... I was trying to start tying the Gold Bead Hare's Ear Nymphs tonight, and I cut up my dubbing, and it came out good. But when i started trying to get some tail hair from the Mask, they are sooo short, I can't even grip them to comb out all that underfur in my fangers.. Is the fly still called a Hare's Ear Nymph if I use "raccoon mask" guard hairs for the tail??? LOL.. Thanks, Chuck Wait.. I just went back and read Jimi's post here in red, so with the Any variation, I guess raccoon tail is OK , but, if I wanted to use the hare's ear hairs for a tail, how do I get them long enough?? Or did I just get a real short haired mask like I said??? "15 flies, any variation or size of the Hares Ear. Due date end of February?"
