Ed: I have always like the way my dry flies (Adams, Cahills, etc) look
tied on a dry fly hook with a turned up eye. (Is it Mustad 94842 or
94845?) However, with the eye turned up, the leader knot in the eye is
raised even higher above the water. If you have any drag on the leader
and fly, (I may be the only one who experiences drag during the
presentation) this tends to bring the knot and eye down to the water and
the fly doesn't ride on the water correctly. The nose is down and the
tail is vertical. I have stopped using the turned up eye hooks.

Ed,

There are a lot of variables that have to enter into the discussion,
and then opinions will vary:

Hook shank length
Type of knot used
Size of hook
Species of target fish
Fly-wet or dry, streamer, deep running, shallow
Live bait, dead bait,
Circle-hook, semi-circle, curved, kirbed, etc.
