I carried some vintage blind eye salmon irons and some very large vintage
streamer hooks on a plane along with a fully dressed salmon fly to show them
what the hooks were for.
Some of the hooks were at the least an 8/0 the fly was a 4/0 - 5/0 hook.
I did tell them ahead of time that they were in my bags and that the hooks
were irreplaceable so they couldn't insure them. I didn't have any
trouble.
You are supposed to be able to carry fishing tackle on but I would let them
know up front so you still have time to add it to your bag if you need to.
I had a back up plan with a relative on both ends waiting to make sure I
made it through the TSA with my package.
Truthfully .... although one of the TSA supervisors at one destination knew
I had them, I don't think the spot checkers even saw them in my bag.
Pull up the regulations and take a print out of them with you if you're
worried about it.
Regards,
Deb

Subject: [VFB] Carry-on flies

Hey everyone.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried to carry-on flies on a flight recently?
I know the safeset way is to check them, but thought I'd see if there were
any recent experiences with TSA and flies.

If you've tried or done it, how big were the hooks, how many flies were
there and what happened?

Kev
