It's always good to get a bite!
It's hard to tell what is a deciding factor when you change flies and start
catching. Perhaps it's a slight change in size. Perhaps it's a slight change
in the way it floats on the water. Perhaps it's a slight change in the
density of hackle.
I would be interested to see the pictures you describe.
I won't even begin to start banging on about people who use red flies in
over 10 foot of water........

Nice presentation. Okay, I'll bite:
My own experiences would seem to indicate that at times with dry flies,
color (colour) can be
a deciding factor. This has been true for me from panfish to bass to
trout.
I would say also there are very few times (at least for myself) that the
fly floats so high that it becomes
just a shadow. I have seen some photos taken from under water of
floating
flies and colors were
visible.
Now, reel me in!

Further to Joseph's e-mail, colour isn't important for dry flies. Assuming
the fly is floating then all the fish sees is a shadow against the
brighter
sky. Colour is not important for dries.

I have very good color perception and I don't see any shift in color when
I use Rain-X. In fact, I dip my dry flies in Rain-X right after I tie
them. Then I don't have to worry about treating them when I first tie
them on.
