Here's another one. Ever since my daughter, Avery, was a wee lass,
her mom's pet name for her was Pookie. A few years ago my boy child
married a girl from the Philippines, where the native language is
Tagalog. Prior to Jacob's return to the States with his new family, I
purchased a Tagalog/English dictionary. Avery was quite upset upon
learning that her nickname in Tagalog, puki, was a literal
translation for a VERY private area of a woman. No one has dared call
her Pookie since!

It's tragic to see...
Yesterday a guy found the fly "Frammus" (Bob Petti) at the VFB
page and joked about its name on a Swedish fly-fishing forum (in
the tying department). In Swedish, this fly's name would mean
something concerning parts below a woman's waist... and what a
discussion that followed!!! In my opinion, it wasn't a rough joke
as much as just pointing out the linguistic part of it... but what
a debate that followed. In a little more than a day there have
been more than 50 posts discussing feminism, insulting women and
all that comes with it. The actual fly has lost its focus a long
time ago but the debate continues... and is covering next to
everything concerning the issue.
I've been sitting thinking "We should have had JD as a moderator
here too!". Already the second post (which wasn't really pointing
out the LINGUISTIC part of the fly's name) would have been too
much for him.
