Jimmy & others: I had forgotten about the J. Austin Forbes micro rods & reels. I can see that they would be fun, but somewhat limited practicality. Those tiny reels, the size of a quarter, were made for J. Austin Forbes by J.W. Young of England.
I will have to change my opinion of these short rods. I was recently fishing with three friends all of whom used 9 foot graphite rods whereas I used a 7 foot bamboo. I really enjoyed using the bamboo and caught some nice fish with it. Incidentally, I have a large collection of J.W. Young reels from 3 inch up to 41/2 inch. Unfortunately, J.W. Young no longer make fly reels and are a fraction of their former self. They were taken over by Masterline who in turn were taken over by Cortland. I'm not sure who has the manufacturing right to the J.W. Young name. I think J.W. Young's grandson or great grandson still produces reels for the the United Kingdom "coarse" fishing market i.e. not trout or salmon. Jimmy, I have cast these rods at several shows when I was doing the show circuit. Neat little rods. I am in the process of making a 4' bamboo rod, I should get around to finishing it. I have a reel that is not much bigger than a Quarter. If all goes well, I might have it ready for Sowbug time. Tony --- "Jimmy D.
