Lefty Kreh used to cast 90 feet of fly line with ionly the top section of his rod. So distance is not really an issue, actually distance is hardly ever an issue. 90% of the casts you make are less than 25 to 30 feet or even shorter.

How far is it possible to cast with a rod like that?
I saw once a bamboo three weight that someone had fmeone had purchased for
his new daughter but it was for a wall mount only. Very cute though.

I can't see how one can fish with a three foot long fly rod? For a small
stream, seven feet is fine, six ok but any shorter would be less than
useless, unless you are fishing a stream that you can spit across!

My two cents worth!

Nev,

I beg to differ.

I've got a nice little 4-ft. 10-inch J Kennedy Fisher 4 wt. that's
ideal for small streams.
And for larger streams. I used it on the Whitewater River, which is
about 50-75 feet across and it worked perfectly. I also used it on
the Little Blue River, which is about 15 feet across at the time
(we're in a severe drought). Again, it was ideal.

Mind you, a longer rod (9-10 feet) would also have worked well in
both instances. In fact, in the latter situation I could have used a
longer rod for dapping the fly quite effectively.

Gee. Unfortunately, with the severe drought that we've had this
Summer, that's my trip report for the entire summer. :-(
