Peggy;
I have guided in Alaska (Lake Iliamna region, Inland Copper River to be
exact) in the past and some of the flies that that I would reccommend are any
smolt patterns (Salmon fry) any brightly colored marabou Alaskan Salmon flies.
Be sure and take plenty of size 12 - 16 of the following patterns especially if
you get the chance to fish for rainbows, char and grayling
  Royal Stimulators
  Royal Humpies
  Royal Wulffs
Purple Beadhead wooly buggers size 4 - 6
Purple Beadhead Flash buggers size 4 - 6
  Egg sucking leeches

Also check with any local guides for the most up to date information on the
rivers and local hot patterns, they are on the waters everyday and will be the
best source for the info.

We just this week booked a trip to Alaska for August 2008 for 1/2 price. The
deal is ABC RV & Auto Rental out of Anchorage, every October they have a
special for set dates for the following year, the shoulder season, no July for
1/2 price deal and it's unlimited mileage.

At the same time Alaska Airlines has a sale on flights for about the same time
period, or orbitz.com has some nice pricing as well. So for $2500 this family
and a couple of friends are heading west for 2 weeks to fish.

What should we bring for flies, and has anyone been up there or from there?
