Pete: Thanks.. I had been doing it like a combo of the 2nd and 3rd pic. I had
been trimming the barbs real short to give myself a tighter tie in, but then I
had stripped ALL the barbs off one side because it was so hard for me to fold
the feather sides in together. I'm gonna keep trying to fold it over though,
cause the "strip one side" method does take more wraps to make it the same
fullness, thus wasting feathers..Chuck

  Hi, Chuck-
  If I understand you correctly, then yes - The butt end of the feather would
look like the (poor) picture below, with the tip facing the left side of the
screen... I'm not an artist, in case it wasn't obvious... Where you essentially
strip away the bottom barbs from both sides much like one may strip the
'marabou- like' strands from a turkey flat. If the below doesn't make sense,
let me know and I'll butter the wife up so I can borrow her new digital camera
;)

       \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
      ---------------------------------
       ////////////////////

  Personally, I fold the hackle along the stem, but either way would work for
eliminating the 'tail- like' barbs from when you start the palmer.

       \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
       ---------------------------------

  By trimming, you get the 'micro-barbs', which (if outside of the tie-down)
will form the same 'pseudo-tail' you had before, except with shorter barbs. On
the other hand, they make for very useful tie-down anchors... depends on the
tyer's preference more than the fish's, in my opinion.

       \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\,,,,,,,,,,,
       --------------------------------
       /////////////////////'''''''''''''''''''''''

  I hope that comes out ok with the current font and such. Again, let me know
and I'll try to do a pictorial explanation. Also, just to reiterate what I
said before: this method is just one of many, and the relative "better" or
"worse" relationships are merely one person's (my) opinions.
  Tight wraps,  Pete

  >Pete: i see.. so that extra "just the barb" gives Me room to make one round
before actually starting to palmer, to then the barbs will be sticking out
straight if I understand correctly??? Chuck
