1. Agree, brew pubs are the best.  I highly recommend Turoni's in Evansville, IN.

2. Off-topic, yeah, but beer has contributed directly to the production of some of my favorite videos, so I'm taking a pass.  It's the cause of - and solution to - all of life's problems.

Ok ... well, if we're into beer snob talk ... I used to brew beer for a long time, and, as is true with all my obsessions, I really got into it, and, anyway, the best beer anywhere is the beer you can get from a true homebrewer (meaning there the kind that brew with grains and real hops and they've done it a long time) who brews in 10 gallon batches and will likely have beer that may have been bottled (kegged more likely) yesterday ... the next best are one of the thousands of brew pubs around the US where you can get fresh beer that has the individual character of that pub and that batch and is, in most cases, very fresh  (which is one reason that, as a rule, I don't care much for imported beers, since they are not fresh - though I will say a dream is to drink a fresh bitter in a pub in england, or a fresh dopple bock when the kegs are first tapped in the spring in germany)

... my preference if for lots of hops, like India Pale Ales, but enjoy tasting beers from most any brew pub ... I've heard that California has a lot of these, and I'm wondering if there are any in the area?

... the beer snob wannabe ... signing off ... Richard

p.s. For some reason, I'm feeling a little off topic here ....

It's a wonderful day when Oberon hits the shelves for the first time each summer!

I'm not a beer snob, but I know my way around them.  My favs:

US lager: Old Scratch - http://www.flyingdogales.com/
US ale: Oberon - http://www.bellsbeer.com/branddetail.asp?BrandID=7
Ireland: Beamish - http://www.beamish.ie
Canada: La Fin Du Monde - http://www.unibroue.com/

Really though, I prefer Wild Turkey on the rocks over all of these.

We take Budweiser about as seriously as we take the Bush administration. Prepare for some true American beers like Dogfish Head and Magic Hat.

We have a 'Fest of Ale' every year here.  It's great to try out all the different types of beer.  They even give you this little 'scorecard' since one is too pissed to remember what they've drank a couple hours in to the event.

I'll find you next friday at Schlomo's and you can show me some good American beer.  I've heard there is such a thing ;)
