As someone who has made "shows" I wonder if the differences between
them and the "personal vlog" are not so great? My "shows" are very
personal to me and reflect a lot about me: my humor, aesthetics, and
social and political leanings. One author can write a diary that
communicates less about him then another writer's fiction. Kurt
Vonnegut wrote science fiction and really personally revelatory
stuff. In his "stories" we find out he was one among a handful of
survivors of the Dresden bombings. We find out his mother was
Schizophrenic. Compared with many peoples' memoirs, he really poured
his guts out. One of my "shows" clearly depicts me yelling at my
father and my friend. It wasn't fake yelling. It was real and angry
and they mocked me and made me angrier. If "stories" and
therefore "shows" can be just as personal and revelatory as a "diary"
and a "personal vlog" what is the point of making these
distinctions? Shouldn't we be more concerned with what touches and
inspires us? Epic poetry, diaries, plays, journalism, novels,
documentaries, "personal vlogs" and "shows": every form contains a
story that in itself contains truth and fiction.
