A footnote worthy of mention I think is the 1946 film Etoile sans lumiere - it the same general story as Singin' In the Rain but it's about the transition to sound in France. Edith Piaf in a rare acting role plays the voice behind the star. Alas not on DVD but worth looking for on TCM.
