I am not a copyright lawyer, but I am French-educated. For a French production you are dealing with the question of the rights of the author (for motion pictures in France, typically at least whoever wrote the screenplay). Laroche died in 1962-- and Sartre in 1980, so I would say it is incredibly safe to say, not PD, but unfortunately very much OP in the US.
I believe you can still get new legal Region 2 DVDs from France (it's listed on fnac.fr). VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
