Hi Debra,

We do circulate noise cancelling headphones from two locations in the library.
We circulate them out of my department, the Music & Media Center, because our
viewing stations for reserve media items are, sadly, in very public spaces so
they are required equipment for us. That said, we allow our headphones to go
anywhere in the library and they are most often used by individuals to listen
to music on their computer. We circulate Sony Dynamic Stereo Headphones
(MDR-7506). Most of them were purchased well probably in 2008 and in the 6
years I've been here we've only one set fell apart on us. Our Technology desk
elsewhere in the library also circulates headphones largely as a service to
students in the library; they use a cheaper brand that seem to require
replacement fairly often. I don't think noise reduction in the library was ever
part of our discussions on whether or not to make headphones available.

Best,
-lisa H.

Subject: [Videolib] noise canceling headphones in your library?

Hi-

Does anyone circulate noise canceling headphones in their library? We are
doing what we can go keep noise levels down on two floors, but sometimes this
is impossible. I know of the sanitation issues and expense of such phones, but
I'm curious to hear your pros and cons.

Thanks!

Debra

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
