page with some anglo characters here and there, and a whole lot of blank
rectangles where most Vietnamese characters should be.

Samsung el-cheapo ML-4500), so I figure it's more with the Linux.
My question is: have you encountered this problem with Vietnamese web
pages such as the ones under http://www.thanhnien.com.vn, and if so, how
did you lick it?

Try copy & paste ;). I mean copy text from browser & then paste into
editor. If your friend's browser is Firefox, please read VNOSS news
(bantin VNOSS). Maybe it'll help.
