I\'ve got the same problem a few years ago with mandrake 8.2 and Mozilla
(1.4). Basically the problem, as a friend of mine explained to me, is
that you need a good integration of the fonts with the applications and
with the printing.
If VN is well displayed, it means that integration of Unicode VN-capable
fonts are well integrated with your application.
If printing is bad (with rectangles, squares or ? marks) it means that
integration of fonts with the impression is not yet optimal. Something
like the bad font is called when sending data to the printing system.
You can have the same problems actually with recent printers under
Windows. Old laser printers like HP 3L would print VN perfect because
they don't have pre-installed fonts in their memory and so, they need
the fonts to be sent by the application. In recent printers that came
with some fonts loaded in memory (HP 1200L, for example), if it happens
that the fonts do not support Unicode you would have the same printing
problem as you described under Linux. In this case you need to specify
the application NOT to use printer fonts, but send truetype fonts (which
is longer, of course) or send the page as image (bitmap which is even a
longer printing time).
Thus in FC4 you have to look at the printing system and integration of
the right font (one that supports Unicode, of course). I don(t know how
to do that with FC4 as I'm using Debian-like systems for a while. Under
Debian, you just have to install the MS truetype core fonts (apt-get
install msttcorefonts) and that's it : displaying and printing VN is good !
Try copy & paste ;). I mean copy text from browser & then paste into
editor. If your friend's browser is Firefox, please read VNOSS news
(bantin VNOSS). Maybe it'll help.
It will help better if you can indicate which issue of VNOSS news
(bantin) to read : there are at least 17 issues to browse for !
