Hi, i don't really know anything about third party software creating contour graphics, but you might want to give the DEM layer a try if you only want to have a visual representation of the terrain height (absolute mode) or the amount of height change (gradient mode).
on the other hand, adding a third mode "contour lines" to the DEM layer might be a nice idea. i will look for some nice code generating contour lines from SRTM data (maybe gdal_contour). however, for me this would be a long-term project. if i wanted a fast solution for viking, i'd set up a WMS server that serves blank contour files, as you noted. david -- "Sir Isaac Newton is said to have avowed that he felt like a child picking up shells beside the great and unexplored ocean of truth."
