I've checked this on my low end machine - ASUS EEEPC 701 (which has a 900 MHz
Intel Celeron M processor).
It seems fine with a basic setup of a few tracks (~10).

But when using a big vik file (a file of many of my GPS tracks (~100 tracks) is
about 13Mb), and zoomed out to see all the tracks it is slow (and also slow
even on my desktop machine - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+) , but gets
there in a few seconds.

However I don't see this being a typical use case, so it's not bad.
If I find it particularly annoying, I may investigate ways of making it faster;
such as making 'intermediate' updates not do try to redraw tracks (when more
than ~50 tracks) until the 'final' update.

I don't know the etag stuff so I can't comment about it.
