Great thread, glad to see a group of people just wanting to help improve the site. From a different POV, many of the same issues I was bumping around have come up here, which makes me think they are rather well grounded and thought out issues, but very hard to fix. The issue of the usefulness of the MainPage was one of my major concerns, not for its usage as a tip browsing interface, but for its usefulness as a "kicking off point for help" -- but it seems to me that the fundamental issues are basically.
#1. How can we get over WikiFear, what are the best ways to get people comfortable enough to edit / comment / add / create their own sections. #2. How can we make the MainPage as useful as possible? #3. How can we push out daily tips (could be reworded as, improve tip browsing, or direct link improvement) On #1 -- I think it is UserPages, UserPages, UserPages. That is my two cents, read my thread for more info on that. On #2 -- I think a LOT of thought, time, and effort is already being spent on this problem, and I think as John sorts though ideas, he will pick the best ones and go with them. I agree with most of what was said on this topic. On #3 -- I think an RSS feed (possibly linked to a daily mail) with the tip, and a link-back to the wiki, where people can comment on the tip, would probably be terrific. I am not sure if you might want to lock down the tip for editing the day you push it out -- but having a daily, editorially checked tip -- would be a nice place to start. You could also consider it part of the wiki cleanup process -- because each day you would be cleaning up, looking for dupes, etc on one tip. If you could find 7 people to do it, one person each days, once a week -- you would get good coverage with minimal work. 365 editor checked tips a year.
