It works for me.

Note that I also use the engspchk plugin, which seems to do a better job 
  when syntax highlighting is turned on. That being said, "]s" has 
nothing to do with that plugin, and it works for me whether or not I 
load it.

Are you sure you have something like...

set spell
set spelllang=en_us

in your .vimrc?
