I've been trying to think of anything special I had to do to get spell 
checking to work, but I just can't come up with anything. I've scanned 
through my .vimrc, but I don't see anything...

Now, for Vim7, I did have to do a...

let g:tex_flavor='latex'

However, I assume that that's already the case for you (or else you 
wouldn't be seeing Vim-LaTeX at all).

Try misspelling a word. If you cursor over the word, can you type:

z=

to get suggestions? What happens?
