OK. So that are the best commands to do this conversion?  I suppose I
can try this out now, since the github repository is for testing only.

You mentioned the size of the repository after "export to github" was
much larger than the one resulting from the local conversion.  How do
you see that?

Can you give me that script?  I could give it a try.

Actually, what I can do for testing is run the cleanup script for
Mercurial, without pushing the changes back to Google code.  Then run
the local conversion script and do push the result to github.  Then we
should see exactly what we would get eventually, while not touching what
is currently the official repository.  Sounds like a safe and useful
exercise.
