The Vim Tips wiki is at http://vim.wikia.com/
Wikia is a for-profit company. They tried unobtrusive text ads, but found their revenue is insufficient (in fact, there are current news stories about 10% of Wikia staff being layed off). Therefore, Wikia has made some changes which have finally hit our wiki: - Anonymous users will see ads on most pages. - Logged on users should only see ads on the main page. - Logged on users will see a blank space instead of an ad. - Some ads are really ugly flash crap (can be reported). - The default skin has changed to Monaco Smoke. There is a procedure to report "bad ads" whereby you work out the URL of the offending item, then email it to Wikia. I might do a little of this, but only in really extreme cases: http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Bad_advertisements I recommend that readers create an account and log on. You will be asked your date of birth (required by the US COPPA child protection act). Enter a bogus birth date in 1990 or earlier. I recommend a genuine email address: I have received no junk mail, but it is handy to receive an email if you choose to watch a page, or if another user wants to contact you (they don't see your email address unless you reply). When you log on, there is an option to remember your logon. I choose that, and only have to log on once a month. The ads will be a hassle, but they are somewhat unavoidable. Wikia provide a very good service and I'm going to try to live with the ads. John --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message from the "vim_use" maillist.
