I use Consolas at small size with bg=#000000 and fg=#cccccc (and I use
the zenburn colorscheme).

Consolas is a font designed by Luc(as) de Groot, he made the typefaces
for a lot of newspapers and created the super-family 'Thesis', I trust
my eyes on his work ^_^.

The Consolas has a gorgeous lowercase (two-storied!) g (but a not so
great @) and *real* italics (not only slanted) and bold. I really love
the <> pair too (this is where the Vera Sans Mono/DejaVu Sans Mono
fails a big time for me). The l1iI and 0oO are easily differentiable
(and you have options for alt. styles for l r j i f), full Greek and
Cyrillic alphabets, ligatures (fi, fl), old styles figures, superior
and inferior figures and a interrobang (not usefull for programing but
they are cool!).

But you need a good subpixel rendering. I use Linux and the freetype
render Consolas very well (using urxvt).
