Either the file you are editing is broken (in which case your own style guide would not help you either. Obviously, whoever created and maintained it did not heed it) or tabs will work perfectly if used as intended. No one is stopping you from using a width of 8. The thing we object to is that you are forcing _everyone else_ to use _your_ style. Sorry to say so, but this makes you part of the problem the rest of us is facing. I am not saying you must change your ways and I sincerely hope you did not take the above personally. I just do not understand you or your reasoning.
