OTOH it would require modifying the C source and the vimscript language. At the moment, AFAIK, there are exactly 16777216 possible backgrounds (if your video card and monitor support them), or 256 values each of the red, green and blue components. This counts for the Normal highlight group (used by default where no other highlights have been set) as well as for each of the individual highlight groups.
