Well, just in case you didn't know, it isn't the only one of its kind. 
In Vim, for historical reasons, the following pairs are synonyms:

        Ctrl-[  and     <Esc>
        Ctrl-I  and     <Tab>
        Ctrl-M  and     <Enter>

        Ctrl-letter     and     Ctrl-Shift-letter
        (i.e., Ctrl+upper/lower case of the same letter A-Z)

and usually but not absolutely always
        Ctrl-H  and     <BS>            (the backspace key)
        Ctrl-?  and     <Del>
(for these two, see also e.g. ":help :fixdel")
