Wellp, there's always "resume padding", legitimate or otherwise. Eg, I know a
few people with their own businesses, and I can always ask if they need a small
task done. From the time we talk of it until it gets completed, even if it be
only 1 day of work, it can be 2mos time. So right there, it's 2mos as a
consultant for XYZ Solutions.

Exactly. 'Though I was the exception, by *no* means the norm, in that the only
times I ever got actual significant *increases* in pay (~17% on average) was
after getting canned. Otherwise, it's usually a paltry 3% or so per year
"raise".

Plus, it's nice to "live cheap" and have a "F-you!" fund to ride out the year
or more it may take to find a new fulltime gig that pays decently. Sometimes
you have to do what it takes, eg, going from a fear-mah-skillz p/a to tech
support, DBA, etc., just to pay the bills, *keep looking*, then jump at the
first halfway decent offer that comes along more in line with what you want to
do.

And believe me, I had more than enough experience being out of work with
startups, small companies, etc., that would *always* need to put out the "low
man on the totem pole" when things get slightly rough.

That being said, I absolutely agree with you that it's way easier looking for a
new gig when you already *have* a job, than having HR weenies salivate at the
prospect that they can lowball the guy who doesn't have one and will take
*anything* for *any* pay.
