eeks -- indeed i did -- my mental gears were not fully engaged 
when i wrote that -- in my defense i'll say i've mapped 

        :so ~/.vimrc 

to <Leader>l and i *think* "load" when i use it

true, but there are thousands of ways of starting vim, but in 
the majority of cases, .vimrc is sourced at the outset
