Do you have appleshare, filesharing, filesharing monitor, and the appletalk extentions? ( I think that is what they are called) you will need those on _both_ of the macs in order for them to see and share files between one another. I am still trying to get my LCII and PowerMac 6100 to talk, but I have only spend an hour or so on it before I gave up and decided to wait for the rain to stop so I can drag a few more monitors out of the garage... and find another ADB cable...
