Trying to do all that to a Mac that is not connected to any network,
from a Mac OS X or a Windows machine has been quite convoluted to say
the least...
What eventually worked for me was:
- convert from bin format with Stuffit Expander on the emulated System
7 Mac on my Mac OS X
- test to confirm that these images are able to create a complete CD
image of the install
- create a .img with Disk Copy for every part (19 disk images!)
- copy the disk image files to a Windows machine
- use WinImage to raw write each disk images to a diskette (rawwrite
would work as well, but did not do so well on my Windows laptop)
- move the diskettes over to the Performa and copy the contents over
to the hard disk
- start the install

There must be a smarter way, but believe me I tried several approaches
that did not work. Remember the Performa had only the minimal system
from Apples Network Access Disk. Expanding or decoding did not work.
Any file with a resource fork could not be copied to the Performa (or
more accurately: were not properly copied to a diskette either from a
Mac OS X machine or a Windows machine).
Anyway, the Performa is now in working condition, and able to
recognise CD's so I should be able to move more stuff to it when I
have received the burnable cd's I ordered... Now let's hope WinImage
is able to raw write HFS cd's on my Windows machine... We'll see
