I find your comments rooted solely in ignorance. You find yourself offended, and even once explained, you continue to shout from your soapbox. I only redirect to Kevin's site, I don't own it. I have no interest in making a dime off of his service, nor will I. As for the images he uses, they are freely available all over the web, which he states on his page (most of which is illegal by the way, which is why I would never link to for that reason). All he is offering is the service of transferring them to 400K formatted media for early Macs. The fact that you make rude assumptions about my motives or his and then demean my character by suggesting I wouldn't let you download the images for free is not only libelous at best, but ignorant of the service being offered. Indeed it shows a contempt to even try to understand it, but rather just hammer your own point.
WhyOSX, in case you missed the point, while the disk images are widely available (those at Apple 100% legal, those at MacGarden are not), not everyone has the means to make them into real disks. The Mac Plus, SE & II use 800K disks and require the real hardware. USB floppy drives can be used in modern Macs but only with 1.44MB disks and Snow Leopard no longer supports the HFS file format. So the options even for pre-OS 8 systems are getting considerably thin. Addressing d.colvin d.colvin's question, I bought macbootdisk before Kevin Rye even set up his site. Once he did, I pointed my site to the most useful location possible. If you don't understand this, it's only because you've never been aware of the many masked URLs you visit everyday. Try typing "Mac.com" and see where that takes you. As I pointed out, Kevin will not offer the service for ever. When he stops, I think having a consistent reliable URL that points to another source (or sources) is preferable over dozens of dead links and 404 errors. platnicat, your very unfamiliarity with the need for and disinterest in offering System 1.1, or anything less than System 6, is exactly why I posted the link. I am thrilled to hear you are not only generous but reliable thank's to Mack's review. And I am serious. If you'd like to set up a web page, or would like me to set up a web page for you offering your services, I am more than happy to point my link to you. I am only interested in serving the community's best interests and reliable free disk images is in the best interest. Had I known of your offer when I pointed my site to Ken, I would have directed the page to you instead. However, you need to be willing to offer the older systems as well. In fact, I should set up a page which points to you and his and describe the options available. It was just a whole lot easier to forward my URL to his. My original intent for buying the site was to offer 400K disk images with early systems prior to System 6. I too would have charged, but the minimum for the disk stock and shipping. So my disks would have cost about $4 or $5. Again I have no interest in making a profit, but offering a service to the vintage Mac community. Personally I have no interest in operating at a loss either. If platnicat wants to take on that service entirely out of his own pocket, great.
