I've always understood it to be pre-PPCs. It's changed a bit since the 
Quadra list was merged in, but:

Vintage Macs <http://lowendmac.com/lists/vintagemacs.shtml>, 1998.06.18, 
is for users of pre-PowerPC Macs. This includes the compact Macs, the 
entire Mac II series, Quadras, and several LC and Performa models. 
Current membership is above 1,300.

 From there, it splits up into PCI PowerMacs, 1st PowerMacs, and Old Mac 
MP for the later machines, on up to Macintels.
