By "sing," do you mean the sound the variable-speed drive made as it spun the 
floppy?

Personally, I never thought the sound resembled "singing" as much as it 
resembled the machine "extruding data" from the floppy.  To my own ears, the 
disk spinning around always had a bit of a strained sound to it.

And if a particular floppy was vigorously spun around, then spat out, well, 
that only served to reinforce the whole swallow/extrude metaphor for me. :)
