I found this info about using AppleShare over IP back to System 7.5.3
Macs - useful for connecting vintage Macs that have Ethernet to OS X
machines that don't show up in the Chooser.

You'll have to go to the original page for the "click here" downloads:

=======================
AppleShare Client

To connect to an AppleShare file server via TCP/IP the Macs need to be
running AppleShare Client 3.7.x or higher.

The version of the AppleShare client software you use depends on the
version of the system software you have installed on your computer:

For Mac OS 7.5.3 up to (but not including) version 7.6, use AppleShare
Client version 3.7.4. To download AppleShare Client 3.7.4, click here.
For Mac OS 7.6 up to (but not including) version 8.1, use AppleShare
Client version 3.8.3. To download AppleShare Client 3.8.3, click here.
For Mac OS 8.1 and later, use AppleShare Client version 3.8.6. To
download AppleShare Client 3.8.6, click here.
=======================

OS 9 has this built in, I believe.

This should work up to 10.5.x Leopard, but Snow Leopard has ended
compatibility with pre-OS X versions of AppleShare (AFP).

Cheers,
Chris Adams.
