It's not a SCSI like port, it is a serial port that uses the same connector as the SCSI port on a Mac. > > Careful. Thus serial printer cables are > different from modem cables. Sigh. Be even more careful. DB-25 connectors are used for RS-232 serial, parallel printer ports, SCSI and other uses. Some laser printers have a SCSI port, either to attach external disk drives or as a way for the computer to communicate with the printer. And in some cases a DB-25 is used as opposed to the Centronics-Type SCSI connector. And some parallel printers use a DB-25 connector for the parallel interface. The ImageWriter I uses a DB-25S for RS-232 serial. The gender is the same as for a modem. A Mac Mini-DIN 8 to DB-25P cable is used for both modems and the printer. But the printer is configured as Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) while a modem is Data Communications Equipment (DCE). The serial cable from the computer needs to have the opposite configuration to communicate with the device (printer or modem). The difference in the two depends on which pins on the connector are output and which are input. So for the Mac there are printer and modem cables that look identical but function differently. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting "I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway" -- ----- You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
