Reading your problem indicates to me that  the user who sent you the file
may not have been burned by apple disk utilities  or it may have been
corrupted in its travels thru cyberspace.

You could ask how it was burned and ask for another copy.

You could also try to mount the disk image and run the installer from the
disk image since the disk image on the desk top is similar to a virtual
drive. Sometimes that works.
