The only big problem I've had with Open Transport is it's impossible to remove
a server from its preferences if the server no longer exists to be logged into.

You have to be logged into a server to be able to remove it from the list,
quite a stupid "feature" of OpenTransport. The only way to get rid of any
servers you can't log into is to delete the OT preferences and set it all up
from scratch.

I suspect that was quite often a headache for Macintosh IT departments. Before
making any network changes, they'd have to go to every Mac on the LAN and
delete logins to anything that was going to be changed *before* making any
changes elsewhere. Otherwise they'd have to do the network setup from scratch
on every Mac workstation.

OT tries to login to everything in its list, which wastes time on anything it
can't access. It eventually times out but that takes a long time.

Would be nice if there was an OT preferences editor for deleting dead server
information.

As for BootP, I have a couple of older HP JetDirect printservers that don't
support fixed IPs (unless I can find the unobtainable Flash SIMMs) but can be
remotely assigned fixed IPs from a BootP server.

I've always found it much simpler for network printers to have fixed IPs
because unless the DHCP server and the printers are left running 24/7, Mac and
Windows operating systems like to forget where the printers are when their IPs
change.

BootP can be more convenient than DHCP because IPs don't need to be changed in
flash rom or software on individual devices, yet can still have a unique IP
assigned from the BootP server.
