PhoneNet was created to use cheap phone cord wires that could be custom made to
any length instead of the expensive three wire Apple LocalTalk cables that only
came in a few fixed lengths.

The easiest way to do PhoneNet cables is to get phone wire with 4 wires,
several plugs and a crimping tool. Get phone wire that has a color stripe or a
small ridge on one side so you can be sure the plugs are on the same direction
at both ends. (I presume the center pins aren't connected to anything in the
PhoneNet transceivers.)

Then you can also make keyboard cords for old compact Macs. IIRC the plugs have
to be opposite orientation on each end of the cord. I assume Apple set them up
like that so people couldn't just use a standard phone handset cord if
something happened to their Mac's keyboard cord.
