The center pins aren't connected in the PhoneNet transceivers. It's done this way so you can use household phone wiring where the second phone line is on the outer two pins. If you don't have a second line but the phone jacks are wired with for it you can use them for PhoneNet. PhoneNet / LocalTalk doesn't care if the pair is reversed. Standard RJ-11 phone cords are normally reversed but the phone doesn't care either (usually). > > Then you can also make keyboard cords for old compact Macs. Classic Mac keyboard cords are straight through so the cable is the same at both ends. Phone cords are wired crossover style.
