Actually some PCs and the MacBooks have hibernate mode or suspend-to-
disk, which RAM is written out, which can go on indefinitely if
battery is run down.

Some PowerMacs have deep sleep mode where the fans shut off, but it
depends on what you have installed in the slots.

I don't know if this was suggested before but I think the OP should
try a PCI video card.
